Shoonyata: Our Favourites from the Collection

The Shoonyata collection was born out of our Creative Head, Sarita’s, desire to create a collection that focused on studying the form of the circle. The collection is deeply inspired by the circle’s philosophical significance as the void from which creativity and potential are born. It is an exploration of the paradox of the circle - which at once signifies beginning and end, continuity and cessation, completeness and nothingness. This paradox is also reflected in the universal experience of life, where one must learn to accept the good with the bad. As such, Shoonyata is a meditation on the nature of our existence, the acceptance of interconnectedness and a lack of inherent existence.

In keeping with this theme, this collection marries the traditional pit loom Jamdani with the intricate Jacquard method, resulting in a harmonious fusion of craftsmanship. This collection's silhouettes redefine chic minimalism with precise cuts, fluid drapes, and sharp lines. Modern allure meets minimal grunge, inviting wearers to embrace timeless sophistication through experimental jamdani designs. 

To celebrate the online launch of Shoonyata, our founders, Sarita and Sarika, have selected their favorite picks from the collection, highlighting the details that make each item special! 

1. Shoonyata Reverse Circle Sheer Kaftan

The Reverse Circle Sheer Kaftan dress features a grid design with reverse circle motifs in silver zari. It balances bold geometric aesthetics with the delicate texture of the sheer black fabric. The use of the reverse circles here, with the circles occupying the negative space in each grid box, is inspired by the idea of learning to accept both negative aspects of life along with positive.

Sarita says: “This dress is so fun to wear. Firstly, I love the way the circles are placed on this – a lot of thought has gone into the way the circles have been arranged so the composition is not just a simple repeat pattern. Also, the drape of the fabric used here is amazing and allows the silhouette to fall beautifully. It feels like a wisp of air when you wear it! It’s breezy, but chic at the same time and great for evening wear.”

2. Shoonyata Panelled Gathered Dress

The Panelled Gathered Dress has a relaxed A-line silhouette that drapes gently to a midi-length, giving it a graceful and elegant look. Soft gathering at the waist enhances the body’s shape, while maintaining ease of movement, and a soft V-neckline completes the dress’ minimalist aesthetic. You can give this dress a more formal look by paring it with our Burnished Tissue Pants.

Sarita says: “This one is a really easy pick because it’s not too over the top because there’s no jamdani in it, but it still looks and feels really rich because of the interplay of different fabrics, sheens, and colours. I’m also extremely happy with the way we’ve used different kinds of lines – vertical, horizontal, and checked – to bring out an added dimension in the design. This is one of those dresses that has a subtle yet complex design sensibility to it.”

3. Shoonyata Stole 001

The Shoonyata Stole 001 is an elegant representation of minimalism and grace. Handwoven in fine silk, this exquisite piece features a monochromatic Blue base adorned with a series of subtle circular Jamdani motifs in muted silver hues, symbolizing wholeness and simplicity. For its versatility and brilliant colour, this stole is probably one of the easiest to pick from the Shoonyata collection!

Sarika says: “This stole is so special to me because of this vibrant blue colour paired with the simple circle motif in silver zari. It’s so easy to pair with really any look to dress it up. No matter how it’s draped the pattern will be visible. I personally recommend wrapping it around your shoulders like a shawl to really allow both the colour and the pattern to shine through.”

4. Shoonyata Striped Circle Hi-Lo Top

The Striped Circle Hi-Low Top features a relaxed silhouette with a structured yet flowing fit and is naturally dyed in rich shades of black and plum. Its standout design element is the intricate play of Jamdani motifs, with horizontal silver zari, imparting a subtle sheen to the top. The circular void motif at the center serves as a focal point, a detail that grounds the design and brings the piece together.

Sarita says: “This top is so stylish and so comfortable. I really love the contemporary silhouette and the strip of colour in this, which I think pulls everything together. This top is an excellent staple for your wardrobe. It’s so easy to dress it up or dress it down. Throw it on with black pants, jeans, or a really nice pencil skirt, and you’re ready to head out for the evening!”

5. Shoonyata Hybrid Jamdani Jacket Dress 

The Hybrid Jamdani Jacket dress features a random circle motif with a combination of vertical and horizontal stripes in silver zari. The stripes are arranged in various thicknesses and orientations, so as to emphasize the circles in some parts of the dress, while breaking the boldness of the circular pattern in other parts. The dress also includes buttons all down the front, which offers versatility in how it can be styled – either as a dress, or as a jacket over a complimentary outfit! Its bright blue colour and all-over silver zari work make it a great choice for any formal occasion!

Sarika says: “I absolutely love the colour of this dress – it’s festive, but not over the top. I can easily wear it by itself for a dinner party, or dress it up for a wedding function. I actually wore this recently at a wedding I attended and received lots of compliments! To style it for a formal occasion I paired it with our Shoonyata 001 Stole and Shoonyata Burnished Tissue Pants*.”

Sarika says: “I really like the boldness in the design of this one. The different circle motifs are really highlighted by the use of the stripes. I also really like the way the stripes are not monotonous, but broken into various thickness and orientations. The feel of the dress is also extremely luxurious and the fabric just takes the shape of your body, which makes me feel really beautiful and confident when I wear it. I would style it with our Burnished Tissue Pants and Shoonyata 002 stole to dress it up for formal events like a wedding function.”
